Concussions in Sports
The Dr. Casey Show
November 22, 2008

During my premiere episode, Dr. Dave Lechuga (Neuropsychologist at NeuroClinic.com) provided some excellent advice and perspective regarding the delicate issue of sports concussions. I chose this as my topic for the November 22 debut of The Dr. Casey Show after reading that Rey Maualuga sustained a concussion during the USC –v- Stanford game and did not take himself out, despite recognizing symptoms.

My Top 5 Notes from Dr. Lechuga’s Interview:

1. You Cannot Prevent a Concussion
2. Concussions are an INJURY and not a sign that you "might" be hurt
3. Pre-Season testing, such as the Impact Baseline test is important for evaluating an athlete’s safety to return to play
4. There are non-physical symptoms that create life difficulties for athletes after a concussion such as learning difficulties and mood swings
5. The best way to have a long sports career is to be honest in reporting your concussive symptoms and DO NOT return to play until you can exercise aggressively without experiencing any symptoms and are cleared by the medical staff!

I also spoke with former UCLA Bruin standout and NFL player, Jason Bell about the realities of reporting and playing with concussions in professional sports. Jason was very open about the number of documented concussions he sustained in sports and the pressure that he put onto himself to return to play faster than he should have. He recognized that the pressure was from him wanting to be there for his teammates. It was only when he could not physically push through the pain of his symptoms and his balance was gone that he took himself out of play.

Jason Bell’s Answers to Dr. Casey’s Get Off the Bench and on the Couch!

1. What is your Pregame Ritual? Keep everything the same! Positive Mental Imagery of his best performances.
2. Favorite Sport to Watch as a Fan? Track and Field (The Hurdles)
3. Words of Advice for Sports Parents: It’s about life development and using sports to achieve beyond the field.
4. Favorite Pre Game Meal? Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches!
5. Best Words of Advice a Parent or Coach Ever Gave: BE YOU!

Keep it safe and fun everyone!

Until we speak again, this is Dr. Casey, and make all your performances their most excellent.
