The SportsWives of OC: BaseBall Edition

05/09/2009

This new series on The Dr. Casey Show featured The Wives of Professional Athletes from the world of Major League Baseball with Orange County ties.

Anne Berryhill, Wife of Damon Berryhill, Former MLB Catcher and Current Coach with Los Angeles Dodgers

Jessica Erstad, Wife of Darin Erstad, Former Angel, Current MLB for Houston Astros

Shanel Saunders, Wife of Joe Saunders, Current MLB Angels' Pitcher

This episode focused on the realities of managing a household, supporting a marriage, raising children and fulfilling a community role as The Wife of a Professional Ballplayer.

During the show, it became clear that a major component of being a SportsWife is to handle the community & giving back role for the family. Each has chosen a way to be involved in important causes that reflect their values, and the values of their husbands.

Shanel was just coming off of an event in the morning, for Mothers Against Drunk Driving where she was the team captain for the Angels Wives Team, in honor of Nick Adenhart.

Jessica is currently planning her 6th Golf Tournament in Orange County benefiting The Child Abuse Prevention Center to be held in July.

Anne is writing a book focused on helping marriages succeed in a climate where they seem to be doomed to failure, professional sports! The data shows that 80% of sports marriages fail.

Here were some of the important learning lessons during this candid conversation:

1. MOVING. As a sports wife be prepared to move... A LOT. The Berryhills moved more than 30 times in 11 years. The Erstads are currently moving 3 times a year. Each move poses complications, sacrifices and a serious schedule!

2. When do you see your husband? Baseball is a LONG season. Jessica was faced with the reality that her life partner is gone 5-6 months out of the year. Even their days off (playing time) were days spent traveling. Anne is now faced with the reality that her husband may be gone nearly all year round in baseball management.

3. How do you make a marriage work? There are some important unwritten rules to being married to a professional athlete. Husbands keep information about the team quiet and what happens at the ballpark or on the road seems to stay there. But this isn't just to protect their relationships, it is critical to the wives being able to keep their relationships with the fellow sports wives.

Other topics during the show were the most common misconception that people have about their lives, how they met their husbands and advice to other sports wives.
