Sports Injuries on the Rise! What to do?

Injury Prevention! It’s Possible
December 6, 2008

Too many headlines are highlighting the impact of overuse injuries and injuries due to improper mechanics in sports. So I invited one of the best trainers and coaches in the country to discuss the topic, Loren Seagrave.

Here are my take home messages from Loren’s interview:

1. Hands down, there is no evidence to support the idea that specialization early promotes greater success in an athletic career.
2. There is also no evidence to support that year-round sports participation in 1 sport is correlated to greater success in an athletic career.
3. Learning proper mechanics takes 500 Hours of retraining to correct a previously learned and automated skill.
4. Depending on your sport of participation there are techniques that can lower your risk of sustaining a common injury!
5. Many certified trainers don’t know how to train to prevent injuries!!!

I also had a visit with International Sprinting Phenom, Joice Maduaka. Joice is 35 Years-Young and is still competing at the highest level of International competition in the 100 and 200m events. She shared her experiences of training with Loren and how the philosophy of working with a "Teacher" has been one of the most powerful of her career.

Here are Joice’s Answers to Dr. Casey’s Time to Get Off the Bench and On the Couch:

1. What is your Pregame Ritual? Music on my iPod and… (see her favorite meal)
2. Favorite Sport to Watch as a Fan? American Football (She’s learning)
3. Words of Advice for Sports Parents: Children need to participate for themselves, not for you.
4. Favorite Pre Game Meal? A Plate of Crispy Bacon
5. Best Words of Advice a Parent or Coach Ever Gave: Your performances do not define who you are as a person, "It’s only 11 seconds."

Until we speak again, this is Dr. Casey, and make all your performances their most excellent.
